Concentrations, ratios, and sinking fluxes of major bioelements at Ocean Station Papa
نویسندگان
چکیده
Fluxes of major bioelements associated with sinking particles were quantified in late summer 2018 as part the EXport Processes Ocean from RemoTe Sensing (EXPORTS) field campaign near Station Papa subarctic northeast Pacific. The thorium-234 method was used conjunction size-fractionated (1–5, 5–51, and >51 μm) concentrations particulate nitrogen (PN), total phosphorus (TPP), biogenic silica (bSi), inorganic carbon (PIC) collected using large volume filtration via situ pumps. We build upon recent work quantifying POC fluxes during EXPORTS. Similar remineralization length scales observed for both PN across all particle size classes depths 50–500 m. Unlike bSi PIC, soft tissue–associated POC, PN, TPP strongly attenuated 50 m to base euphotic zone (approximately 120 m). Cruise-average thorium-234-derived (mmol m–2 d–1) at 1.7 ± 0.6 0.22 0.07 0.019 0.007 TPP, 0.69 0.26 bSi, 0.055 0.022 PIC. These bioelement similar previous observations this site, exception which 1 2 orders magnitude lower. Transfer efficiencies within upper twilight (flux 220 m/flux m) highest PIC (84%) (79%), followed by (61%), (58%), (49%). differences indicate preferential relative or larger losses tissue biominerals below zone. Comprehensive characterization obtained here will support future efforts linking phytoplankton community composition food-web dynamics composition, magnitude, attenuation material that sinks deeper waters.

Seasonal and interannual variability of phytoplankton, nutrients, TCO2, pCO2, and O2 in the eastern subarctic Pacific (ocean weather station Papa)
A coupled, one-dimensional ecosystem/carbon flux model is used to simulate the seasonal and interannual variability of phytoplankton, nutrients, TCO2, O2, and pCO2 at ocean weather station Papa (OWS P at 50 N, 145 W). The 23-year interannual simulation (1958–1980) is validated with available data and analyzed to extend seasonal and interannual variations beyond the limited observational records...

Small-scale oxygen fluxes and remineralization in sinking aggregates
Sinking aggregates are the major component of the vertical particulate flux in most regions of the ocean. Controlling factors for aggregate remineralization rates and solute exchange with the surrounding water, however, are poorly quantified because of few empirical data. To study the role of flow and diffusion on aggregate remineralization rates, oxygen distributions were mapped within and aro...
متن کاملTemporal variability of DC, DC, and C/N in sinking particulate organic matter at a deep time series station in the northeast Pacific Ocean
[1] A 6-year time series of DC, dC, and C/N measurements in deep sinking particulate organic matter (POM) is presented for an abyssal site, Station M in the northeast Pacific Ocean. The DC values revealed that sinking POM at 3450 m depth (650 m above bottom) contained old carbon despite its presumed short transit time in the water column. The isotopic and chemical properties of the sinking POM ...
متن کاملConcentrations and ratios of particulate organic carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus in the global ocean
Knowledge of concentrations and elemental ratios of suspended particles are important for understanding many biogeochemical processes in the ocean. These include patterns of phytoplankton nutrient limitation as well as linkages between the cycles of carbon and nitrogen or phosphorus. To further enable studies of ocean biogeochemistry, we here present a global dataset consisting of 100,605 total...
